‘Cocaine Bear’ Screenwriter on Sequels, Extreme Gore and 12-Year-Olds Trying Cocaine: ‘I Never Thought Anybody Was Going to Make This Movie’ - Variety

When Jimmy Warden was a kid growing up in Chicago, he wound up watching “a lot” of horror movies when he was, he says, “far too young.”

“I became used to seeing people get their guts eaten or torn out of their bodies, stuff like that,” he says over Zoom with a wry chuckle. “So that’s where a lot of my taste is right now.”

Warden’s sensibility is on robust display in his screenplay for “Cocaine Bear,” the R-rated action-comedy, directed by Elizabeth Banks, that is loosely based on the true story of a black bear who died after ingesting a mountain of cocaine in 1985 from a botched drug smuggling operation. Warden stumbled on the account in the mid-2010s while scrolling through Twitter, “not doing work that I should have been doing,” and instantly realized that “there was something there.”

But Warden wasn’t interested in writing about the drug trafficker who scattered dozens of bags of cocaine across the Appalachian Mountains, and then died when his parachute didn’t open, nor was he keen on writing about a bear who dies from a cocaine overdose.

Instead, he says, he wrote “my twisted fantasy of what I wish actually happened after the bear did all that cocaine.”

Warden first sent his script to Lord Miller, the production company founded by filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller — Warden’s first job in Hollywood was as a PA on Lord and Miller’s live-action directorial debut, 2012’s “21 Jump Street.” Still, despite their reputation for making movies — from “The LEGO Movie” to “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” — that delightfully defy conventions, Warden had zero expectation that his script would ever make it to theaters.

Instead, Universal made “Cocaine Bear,” with most of the $35 million budget going to Weta FX to create a photo-realistic, cocaine addicted black bear. Warden, 33, has already shot his directorial debut, the indie thriller “Borderline,” starring his wife, Samara Weaving. But as he explains to Variety, he also sees a promising future for “Cocaine Bear.”

Was “Cocaine Bear” the title from the start?

Yeah. If I’m being completely honest — maybe I shouldn’t say it — I never thought anybody was going to make this movie. When you have a script, you want to do anything to get people to read it. So there was never any question in my mind that the movie would be called “Cocaine Bear.” I think that if you asked me back then I would have been like, if it ever gets made, I assume people are probably going to want to change the name. But Universal never did.

In talking with Elizabeth Banks as well as Phil Lord, Chris Miller and their producing partner Aditya Sood, they were all very clear that they’d only make this movie if it was called “Cocaine Bear.”

That’s because they are a lot richer than I am. I would have been fine if somebody wanted to make this movie and call it you know, anything. And there are some things in there that, you know, if I were a betting man, I would have bet were going to get taken out. They just championed those things all the way through.

I assume that one of the things you’re talking about is the scene where the two 12-year-olds in the movie dare each other to try cocaine?

Yeah, it’s that scene — which, in the original spec, was the first scene of the movie. I figured, if you start there, and people continue to read after 10 pages of 12-year-olds doing coke in the woods, then you kind of have them.

Was there anything else you thought would be taken out?

I made it overly violent on purpose. I’m not sure how much of a gore fan you are, but at a certain point you cross the line and it becomes so messed up that you can’t help but laugh. It’s not the fringe, pit-of-your-stomach sort of violence; it becomes its own genre in a certain way. This is certainly not the first movie to do that. But I think that Liz executed in a way that this movie definitely crosses the line in terms of gore, but I don’t think it really alienates the audience.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but it sounds like when you wrote this script, you saw it as a calling card to get other work, but you didn’t think a respectable studio would ever make it.

I guess I wouldn’t say “respectable studio.” I’m not sure it’s the right narrative, but that is kind of the truth. It was maybe going to get me some attention that people would read on tracking boards, possibly? Or just another spec that I would just throw on the pile of many that no one ever reads. I’m not sure if this is the best thing for me to say from a publicity perspective, but I don’t really care. The truth is, no, I didn’t think that any respectable studio would make a movie called “Cocaine Bear” and keep all the shit that I had written.

I mean, I’m part of the Just Say No generation that grew up in the ’80s, and watching the movie, there was a part of me that just couldn’t believe it existed at all — there was a time not that long ago where this movie would’ve just been this massive scandal.

What I learned from Phil and Chris and Aditya is that there’s a good nature to this movie as well. I wrote those kids doing [cocaine] with love; they were just very specific and vivid in my mind. I’m 10 years younger than you are. But I still had D.A.R.E. representatives coming to my school every week and just so much anti-drug culture around my school. So I never thought that anybody could put cocaine in the title and have it be as massive as this movie wants to be.

What did what did you think when you heard that Elizabeth Banks was interested in directing?

I was excited, because I think there’s a dark and smaller version of this movie. And in order to warrant however many millions we were going to need to build this bear, we needed someone that was able to push the envelope in terms of tone and make sure that it was something that everybody was going to want to see. Not just horror fans, not just gore freaks. She took those comedic aspects and continued to build on them.

The movie ends with what feels like a suggestion for a sequel, but given that you didn’t think this movie would get made, do you have an idea for a sequel in your head?

Yeah, for sure. Not just a sequel. Many sequels. “Cocaine Bear in Space” is where we would probably end.

I can’t tell if you’re pulling my leg or not.

No, I’m fucking with you about “Cocaine Bear Goes to Space.” But for the sequels, I definitely have ideas for that. The bear’s not the bad guy in this movie. What happened is a product of circumstance and everybody else’s poor decisions. I think that is a story that we can continue to tell over and over again. I’d be excited to tell it because there are some really good ideas that we have for the subsequent movies.

Finally, and please tell me if this is too personal, but did you draw from any personal experience with cocaine in writing this script?

And this is on the record. (Pause) Yeah, of course. I had personal experiences with both halves of the title. I’ve seen bears in the wild, and as for cocaine, I mean, yeah, who hasn’t? I don’t really know how much [my publicists] will want me to say that I have done cocaine in Variety. But yeah, I guess that’s true. Liz hasn’t, though. She refuses to.

“Cocaine Bear” premieres in theaters on Feb. 24.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s box office isn’t quite Marvel gold - Polygon

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is off to a bit of a slow start at the box office, at least by recent Marvel Cinematic Universe standards. During its four-day weekend, Quantumania brought in $144 million at the box office, but its staying power is what really matters for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Though $144 million is the best debut among Marvel’s three Ant-Man films, it’s also among the lower end of recent MCU fare. Marvel’s first opening of 2022 was also its most impressive, with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness picking up $187 million in its first few days. Disney ended the superhero year with another strong premiere from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which drew $181 million in its first weekend. Meanwhile, Thor: Love and Thunder came in at a comparatively disappointing $144 million, which matches Quantumania’s total — though the Ant-Man movie had the benefit of a holiday weekend to extend its opening and increase its ticket sales.

Though these movies’ openings are important, it’s the continued week-over-week success where Marvel hopes Ant-Man reverse the studio’s recent run of box office disappointments — even if, by MCU standards, they’re still hauling in plenty. Both Thor: Love and Thunder and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever failed to reach the financial heights of their characters’ preceding films, with Love and Thunder falling nearly $100 million off Thor: Ragnarok’s mark in 2017, and Wakanda Forever trailing 2018’s Black Panther by nearly $500 million.

While Quantumania avoided the extreme lows of other recent Marvel openings like Eternals, which managed only $71 million on its first weekend in 2021, it’s clear that Marvel is a little worried about its fans getting burnt out. A week before the Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania premiered, Disney CEO Bob Iger suggested during Disney’s quarterly investor call that Marvel would be releasing a bit less content in the near future and that “more aggressive curation” might be good for the MCU’s future.

Avril Lavigne and Mod Sun Break Up, Call Off Engagement: Sources - PEOPLE

Avril Lavigne and Mod Sun have called it quits.

Less than a year after getting engaged, the pop-punk musicians have decided to end their relationship, sources close to the couple tell PEOPLE.

"Avril and Mod Sun have been on and off for the past two months, but are no longer together as a couple," said an insider.

Lavigne, 38, and Mod Sun, 35, were last publicly seen together at a pre-Grammy event celebrating Julie Greenwald and Craig Kallman in Los Angeles.

Earlier this week, TMZ published photos of the "Girlfriend" singer-songwriter hugging rapper Tyga after sharing a meal at Nobu restaurant. The images sparked dating rumors between the two musicians, but a source tells PEOPLE: "Avril and Tyga are genuinely friends and nothing more. There was absolutely no third party involved in the split."

Reps for Mod Sun and Lavigne have not commented.

Lavigne and Mod Sun, whose real name is Derek Smith, met in January 2021 and released a collaborative single titled "Flames" the same month. They were first romantically linked the following month and later got engaged in April 2022.

The Minnesota-born rocker released his latest album God Save the Teen earlier this month, featuring a track titled "Avril's Song" and a collaboration with his then-partner called "Shelter."

In a recent interview with E! News, Mod Sun described "Avril's Song" as "dark and sweet at the same time," noting that it's lyrics are "a total metaphor" for how he's been affected by the relationship.

"I have found such a partner in this world to go through the chaos that life gives you," he told the outlet. "I have found that person. I'm with a real grown woman who has gone through it all 10 times over and she makes me a better person."

Rebel Wilson and girlfriend Ramona Agruma are engaged after Disneyland proposal: 'We said YES!' - Yahoo Entertainment

Rebel Wilson is engaged to girlfriend Ramona Agruma, the actress announced on Instagram Sunday. According to her post — which sees the brides-to-be kissing while wearing matching pink-and-white striped shirts featuring a heart design — the Pitch Perfect star surprised Agruma with a Tiffany engagement ring.

Wilson's proposal took place at Disneyland, in front of Sleeping Beauty's castle. It comes eight months after the Australian star introduced Agruma as her girlfriend for the first time, telling fans, "I thought I was searching for a Disney Prince ... but maybe what I really needed all this time was a Disney Princess."

"We said YES!" Wilson, 42, captioned her post, thanking Tiffany & Co. for the "stunning ring" and Disney CEO Bob Iger for helping her pull "off this magical surprise." Rosie O'Donnell and Tori Spelling were among those offering the couple their well wishes.

Wilson, who welcomed daughter Royce Lillian via a gestational surrogate last November, came out last summer after an Australian newspaper informed her it planned to break the news of her new relationship with clothing and jewelry designer Agruma. In a recent interview on the Life Uncut podcast, she revealed that Agruma's family "hasn't been as accepting" of the romance as hers has been.

"In many respects, it has been a lot harder on her to have to make the news public," Wilson shared, adding, "As her partner, I feel so sad to see what happened with her family over it. Hopefully, people will change their attitudes about things."

Wilson — who also recently spoke about being told not to lose weight while playing "Fat Amy" in the Pitch Perfect films — also opened up about her sexuality on the podcast, admitting, "I never felt 100% straight."

"When I talked to my good friends, they all knew that part of me, but it wasn't like I was actively exploring it," she added. "I was dating guys, but always being like, 'I wish they were a bit more like this …’ Or it just didn't quite click … I never met a guy I wanted to live with or was in a deep enough relationship with."

A same-sex kiss in 2022's The Almond and the Seahorse "made me feel more open to exploring," Wilson shared. With Agruma, "it just clicked … I feel lucky to have found her."

Box Office: ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ Sizes Up to $46 Million Opening Day - Variety

Marvel Studios has kicked the box office into high gear again. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” landed the largest opening day of 2023 so far with a $46 million gross from 4,345 locations, a figure that includes $17.5 million from Thursday preview screenings.

That marks the third-highest February opening day in history, standing behind two other superhero adventures, “Black Panther” ($75.9 million) and “Deadpool” ($47.3 million). “Quantumania” also landed the highest such figure for the “Ant-Man” series, beating out the 2015 original ($22.6 million) and its 2018 sequel ($33 million).

Released by Disney, “Quantumania” is currently eyeing a three-day opening north of $100 million. Some more bullish industry predictions have the film ending up about $130 million over the four-day Presidents’ Day holiday frame. That would come in under the openings of last year’s Marvel slate, including “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” ($185 million), “Thor: Love and Thunder” ($144 million) and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” ($181 million). But the “Ant-Man” films have typically carried a more modest profile than their Marvel peers (though still a super-sized one in comparison to the average studio release).

Critics have been far cooler than their typically warm reception for Marvel. “Quantumania” currently holds a 35% approval rating from top critics on review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes. Audience reception looks to be below par too, with the film earning a “B” grade through research firm Cinema Score, indicating mild approval among general moviegoers. For comparison, that’s the lowest Cinema Score grade ever for a Marvel Cinematic Universe entry, tied with 2021’s “Eternals.”

In Variety‘s review, chief film critic Owen Gleiberman wrote that he has “rarely encountered a Marvel adventure that’s this busy with a do-or-die saving-the-cosmos plot that feels this much like it exists simply to set up the next dozen chapters of something.”

Directed by Peyton Reed, “Quantumania” stars Paul Rudd as Ant-Man and Evangeline Lilly as Wasp, along with Jonathan Majors debuting as supervillain Kang the Conqueror. The cast also includes Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer, Bill Murray and Kathryn Newton.

Disney also landed in second place on domestic charts with James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water.” The 20th Century Studios production earned $1.35 million on Friday, projecting an $8 million gross through the four-day holiday frame. Now in its 10th weekend of release, “The Way of Water” looks to reach a $658 million domestic gross this weekend.

Third place is projected to go to Universal’s “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.” The animated release could actually end up with a slight week-to-week uptick over the holiday weekend. The DreamWorks spinoff has been holding spectacularly since a slightly muted holiday opening. In its ninth weekend of release, “The Last Wish” looks to push its domestic gross to an impressive $167 million.

“Magic Mike’s Last Dance” doubled its theater count in its second weekend, expanding from a semi-limited 1,538 locations to 3,034. The Warner Bros. sequel earned $1.66 million on Friday, down 66% from its opening day last week. The stripper musical looks to add roughly $5 million to its domestic gross over the holiday weekend.

Rounding out the top five, Universal’s “Knock at the Cabin” is projecting $4.3 million over the four-day weekend, pushing its domestic gross to $30 million. The thriller is tracking behind director M. Night Shyamalan’s recent films, though it carries a modest production budget of $20 million.

How ‘Star Trek: Picard’ Created the High-Tech Bridge of Its Newest Starship - Variety

In just about every way, the third and final season of “Star Trek: Picard” is both about looking back and moving forward. In addition to reuniting the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise from “The Next Generation” for the first time since 2002’s “Star Trek: Nemesis,” it also features a new starship on which most of the action takes place: the U.S.S. Titan, first seen in animated form on “Star Trek: Lower Decks” and now refit as a Neo-Constitution Class Starship.

For showrunner, executive producer and self-professed “Star Trek” fan Terry Matalas, the inspiration for a retro-looking starship came while he was shopping for a car. “I missed a proper saucer section on the top part of a starship, and I couldn’t help but notice how many cars have gone retro these days. And I remember, as I was driving around, I thought, ‘What if Starfleet did that?’”

Matalas continues, “I saw this incredible starship designed by digital artist Bill Krause called the U.S.S Shangri-La, which was a ‘Star Trek: Motion Picture’-era class ship with a half saucer on top and an Excelsior-inspired ‘Next Generation’ curve on the bottom, which I thought was really interesting. I said to production designer Dave Blass, I think the Titan should feel something like this.”

When it came to designing the interior of the Titan, Blass recruited veterans from “The Next Generation” and “Deep Space Nine” – senior illustrator Doug Drexler, scenic art supervisor Michael Okuda and video playback supervisor Denise Okuda, all from Herman Zimmerman’s production design team – but also Sean Hargreaves, who designed the sleek new U.S.S. Enterprise seen briefly at the end of 2016’s “Star Trek Beyond.”

To that extent, Blass literally had the best of both worlds. “I think that the starships in the ‘Star Trek’ universe are as heroic as the captains who sat in those seats,” he says. “So, when we were bringing the production crew together, I wanted to bring the best designers from all of ‘Star Trek’ together on one project.”

Blass continues, “What was really important to me was that we were bringing ‘The Next Generation’ characters back, and I wanted to make sure that my sets and my designs did not feel out of place in a ‘Next Generation’ world. If we were going to have our characters look and act the way they are, then our sets needed to evolve in such a way that it looked and felt like an extension of what had been done in the past while also looking forward at the same time.”

The Bridge was 46 feet wide, big enough with integrated lighting to accommodate the show’s complex shooting needs. As Blass explains, “The bridge of the Titan is only 12 feet bigger than the Enterprise-E [from ‘Star Trek: Nemesis’] and we were shooting with multiple cameras, so it had to be wide enough to get all the widescreen view shots without picking up the other cameras. And we designed the Titan with bigger consoles so the Bridge would light itself because, with our very limited timeframe, we couldn’t completely relight the set for every single take.”

But it wasn’t just how the Titan looked; it was how it sounded. “It was important for us to go back into the archives and dig out everything from ‘The Next Generation’ series and movies,” says Matalas. “There would be new sounds, and there would be updates, but you’d have a blend. So, even though visually you’re seeing Dave’s sets, the sounds are evoking all of those feelings that should be in your DNA if you love the older shows.”

Ryan Seacrest leaving Live With Kelly and Ryan , Mark Consuelos to replace longtime host - Yahoo Entertainment

Ryan Seacrest is leaving his longtime post on Live With Kelly and Ryan.

The talk-show personality announced on Thursday's live episode that he will exit the ABC morning series after joining as a cohost in 2017. Kelly Ripa's husband — and longtime Live fill-in — Mark Consuelos will permanently replace him when the show rebrands as Live With Kelly and Mark.

"Working alongside Kelly over the past six years has been a dream job and one of the highlights of my career," Seacrest said in a statement. "She has been an amazing partner, friend, and confidant, and although we will always be a part of each other's lives, I will miss our mornings together. I also want to thank Michael Gelman and the entire staff and crew — we've made memories to last a lifetime, met some of the most incredible people, and had the warmest welcome into the homes of so many viewers across America. It's been a memorable ride, and now I'm excited to pass the baton to Kelly's 'real' husband, Mark."

Seacrest praised the "trust and bond" he has with Ripa, who called Seacrest "family" as he also confirmed that he'll come back to guest-host across new episodes of Live With Kelly and Mark.

"I love the fact that we get a chance to sit here every day and connect with you in your homes," Seacrest said, getting emotional during the telecast before ending his announcement with a joke. "This show really comes together because of an incredible family of people, many of which have been here long before me. They come in every day with a great attitude, a lot of fun, and a lot of laughs, and we put this show on. I have to tell you, I never thought a television show of this caliber was winged so much."
