Alex Kurtzman Inks Mega New Overall Deal With CBS Studios - Deadline

Alex Kurtzman, the top producer on CBS Studios’ roster and architect of the studio’s Star Trek universe, has closed a massive new nine-figure overall deal there for his Secret Hideout banner. No financial terms are being disclosed but I hear the pact is in the $150 million range, putting Kurtzman in the very top tier of television writer-producers.

The agreement will keep Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout at CBS Studios through 2026, giving the studio exclusive rights to the company’s projects for all platforms, including a series adaptation of Stephen King’s short story “The New York Times at Special Bargain Rates.” Additionally, Kurtzman will remain at the helm of the growing Star Trek franchise for the next six years.  Heather Kadin will continue to lead the Secret Hideout content team, along with SVP Aaron Baiers and director of development Robyn Johnson. Under the new deal, Secret Hideout will expand its ranks with additional executive hires.

This is the second consecutive time CBS Studios has stepped up to re-up Kurtzman with two years left on his deal. The prolific writer-producer-director launched Secret Hideout in 2016 with a four-year overall deal at CBS Studios and Kadin and Baiers as his top executives. Two years later, he signed a new five-year overall deal with the studio — at the time valued at around $25 million — that put him in charge of expanding the Star Trek franchise. Back then, there was one Star Trek series, Discovery. Three years later, Kurtzman and his team have grown the Star Trek franchise to five live-action and animated series for Paramount+. The company also recently produced The Comey Rule and has the upcoming series The Man Who Fell to Earth.

Watch on Deadline

“Extending our valuable partnership with the brilliant Alex Kurtzman and Secret Hideout has been a top priority for CBS and Paramount+,” said George Cheeks, President and CEO of CBS. “Alex’s vision and leadership of the Star Trek franchise and his ability to create artistic and commercial series across all platforms put him in a special class of creative talent”

The much higher value of the new six-year deal for Kurtzman and Secret Hideout than their previous one reflects a far more competitive talent marketplace. Overall deals for prolific top showrunners have gone up dramatically in the last few years, driven by streamers’ aggressive pursuit of A-list creators. Traditional studios have had to stepped up to secure their key producers, which CBS Studios has done with new overall deals for Kurtzman and fellow prolific creators Robert and Michelle King.

The pay increase also recognizes the success Kurtzman and Secret Hideout have had at the studio, making this an easy bet.

“Alex and Secret Hideout have been extraordinary partners who, through their prolific output of high-quality shows, have allowed our studio to grow exponentially,” said David Stapf, President, CBS Studios. “Alex’s vision and breadth of interest is unmatched as he and his team have re-ignited the Star Trek franchise with five (and counting) brilliantly unique series, while at the same time creating long-running hit series for both the Network and premium spaces.”

Kurtzman’s relationship with CBS Studios dates back more than a decade; he co-created and executive produced the studio’s Hawaii Five-0 reboot, which ran on CBS for ten seasons.

“CBS Studios has been my home for over a decade because the incomparable David Stapf always finds a way to demonstrate his decency and creative passion, not just for the work we do, but for the many people who do it,” Kurtzman said. “In David Nevins, I’ve found a rare breed executive with auteur taste and the guts to take chances, who’s encouraged us to create premium streaming and cable that pushes boundaries. And over the last year, I’ve had the extraordinary privilege of being eyewitness to the steady leadership George Cheeks has brought to CBS.”

Star Trek: Discovery

The Star Trek universe built by Kurtzman and Secret Hideout consists of Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, the upcoming Star Trek: Prodigy, in partnership with Nickelodeon, and for 2022, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, featuring the characters Pike, Spock and Number One. In addition, Secret Hideout is in development on a Star Trek project based on “Section 31,” with Michelle Yeoh attached to star.

Beyond television, the Star Trek’s universe also includes digital content across podcasts, websites and social content, as well as global consumer products in gaming, publishing, collectibles, toys, apparel, collaborations and more across all retail channels. Kurtzman will continue to work across ViacomCBS divisions to expand all ancillary Trek products and will hire a franchise manager to report to him.

The New York Times at Special Bargain Rates is based on King’s short story about a woman receiving a call from her dead husband. Jessica Mecklenburg is writing the adaptation. Secret Hideout’s development slate also include previously announced Blackbird: Lena Horne and America, based on the life of Lena Horne, from Kurtzman’s frequent collaborator and writing partner, Home’s granddaughter Jenny Lumet. It is set at Showtime where the company is also developing Scarface and the Untouchable, written by Ben Jacoby. At Showtime, Kurtzman also executive produces Kavalier and Clay, a limited series with a production commitment based on Michael Chabon’s novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay.

Additionally, Secret Hideout has optioned multiple books, including The Girl Who Could Move Sh*t with Her Mind by Jackson Ford. The company is repped by CAA and attorney Michael Gendler.

Here's Jennifer Lopez Posing in a Tiny Bikini on a Yacht, as One Does When You're J.Lo - Yahoo Lifestyle

Jennifer Lopez continued her 52nd birthday celebration week by sharing more thirst trap content for the general public—and promoting her skincare line at the same time. The singer posted two shots of her hanging on her yacht in a yellow string bikini. She credited her go-to photographer Ana Carballosa and tagged JLo Beauty in the post. “Ciao 💛,” she captioned the IG.

Lopez has spent the bulk of her week in Italy yachting and sightseeing on land. Her new bikini shots come shortly after photos of her making out with her back-on boyfriend Ben Affleck at a restaurant in Nerano, Italy, were released.

Lopez spoke to ELLE.com in December 2020 about how she swears by sunscreen above all for good skincare at all ages. She recalled her own experience:

I was in my 20s and I was dating this guy. He went to one dermatologist and I went to another dermatologist. Basically, my dermatologist gave me a great cleanser and some sunscreen and said, “If you do this from now on, your skin is healthy, you're young right now, it's going to be great.” And he's like, “But the sunscreen is the thing.”

And then I went to this other doctor with the boyfriend, and again, I was 20-something years old, and I haven't ever had Botox to this day. And she said, “Did you know you have a little line right here? We should start Botox.” I mean, I had to be 23 years old, right? And I was like, “I'm going to pass.” I didn't like needles anyway, but the boyfriend's like, “Yeah, you should start it. I do that.” I was like, no, thank you. And I just wonder what would've happened to me if I would've started Botox at 23, what I would look like right now. My face would be a totally different face today.

One of the big things I would encourage everybody to do from the time they're 15 years old, even younger, is wear sunscreen every day. We developed a sunscreen you can wear every single day as your day moisturizer, and that is going to protect you more than anything. That's a big skincare secret that people kind of do but don't do. They use moisturizers, but they don't put on sunscreen every day. That is something I have done from that time I was 22 years old.

In the meantime, Lopez's JLo Beauty products are on sale for those hoping to get her just-off-the-yacht glow. Shop the best of her line below.

Morgan Wallen surprises Luke Bryan at first concert appearance since racial slur scandal: ‘Only in Nashville’ - Fox News

Morgan Wallen made his first major concert appearance since he was filmed hurling the N-word back in February.

The country artist, 28, hit the stage at Luke Bryan’s concert in Nashville, Tenn., on Friday night and joined Jason Aldean and Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard and sang his records "Whiskey Glasses" and "More Than My Hometown" before hanging out on stage while Aldean belted "She’s Country."

"A really good friend of mine is here backstage tonight," Aldean told a perplexed Bryan onstage. "I don’t know if you know this."

"Do I need another tequila shot to get through this?" Bryan quipped.

It was then that the embattled Wallen waltzed down the narrow catwalk and greeted his country companions to a cheering sold-out audience as he handed out shot glasses.

MORGAN WALLEN SAYS PAST RACIAL SLUR WAS 'IGNORANT,' WAS INTENDED AS 'PLAYFUL' IN FIRST INTERVIEW AFTER SCANDAL

"Only in Nashville," Aldean said.

Wallen then played "Hometown," introducing the record as "a song about staying true to yourself," adding, "that’s been a really hard thing for me to do lately, but here I am."

The incident in question stemmed from a video taken by a neighbor of Wallen’s on Feb. 2 in which he is heard telling someone to "take care of this... N-word," as he’s being dropped off at his home.

MORGAN WALLEN BREAKS MONTHS-LONG SILENCE AFTER USING RACIAL SLUR: ‘I'VE REALLY WORKED ON MYSELF’

It subsequently led to Wallen’s record label, Big Loud Records, suspending him and conglomerates like iHeartRadio pulling his music from their stations.

After the video of Wallen’s incident hit the internet in February, he told Fox News in a statement, "I'm embarrassed and sorry."

"I used an unacceptable and inappropriate racial slur that I wish I could take back," he continued. "There are no excuses to use this type of language, ever. I want to sincerely apologize for using the word. I promise to do better."

Speaking in a pre-taped interview on "Good Morning America" that aired shortly after, host Michael Strahan asked Wallen how he feels about people who may think his interview is just another "performance."

"I understand that I'm not ever going to make everyone happy. I can only come tell my truth and that's all I know to do," Wallen said.

Wallen admitted he had been "partying all weekend" with some "longtime friends."

He went on to say he and his friends "say dumb stuff together" and it isn't a slur he uses frequently.

"No, I don't think it just happened. I was around some of my friends and we just, we say dumb stuff together. In our minds it's playful. It sounds ignorant but that's really where it came from, and it's wrong," Wallen added. "We were all clearly drunk and I was asking his girlfriend to take care of him because he was drunk and he was leaving. I didn't mean it in any derogatory manner at all."

Strahan pressed Wallen why he would feel it was an "appropriate" word to ever use, to which the country crooner admitted he was "just ignorant about it."

"I don't think I ever sat down and thought, 'Hey, is this right or wrong?’" he said.

Wallen was widely condemned by several country artists, including Maren Morris and Mickey Guyton, after the video surfaced. Asked by Strahan if he believes there is a race problem in country music, he replied, "I mean, it would seem that way, yeah. I haven't really sat and thought about that."

In April, the musician took to social media to issue a handwritten apology to fans and revealed he would be taking a break from performing this summer.

"I have felt a lot of love lately from so many people I haven't gotten to know yet," Wallen began, while thanking his fans who stood beside him. "I know my corner hasn't been the most popular one to stand in recently, but many of you did anyway."

Wallen maintained that he had "made some mistakes" in 2020 and called it a "tough year," likely pointing to his public intoxication arrest in May and disorderly conduct charges in September.

The country star was also scratched as a performer on "Saturday Night Live" after he was spotted partying at a bar without practicing social distancing just days before his scheduled performance.

He went on to write that he always "strives to be better" and that his time away from the spotlight not only helped him identify the ways he wants to improve but also "reminded me that I am still very proud of who I am and the man I am becoming."

3 Zodiac Signs Whose Love Life Improves During The Sun Conjunct Mercury In Leo Starting August 1 - 11, 2021 - YourTango

On August 1 to August 11, when the Sun conjuncts Mercury in Leo, the love life of three zodiac signs begins to improve.

It's always such a relief to know that the major players of the universe are on our side, and so it goes with Sun in Leo Conjunct Mercury in Leo.

What we can look forward to during this transit, which begins promptly on August 1, 2021, is an upgrade in the kind of communication we share with loved ones...especially romantic partners.

The first thing we need to communicate are the words, "thank you."

With Mercury in Leo, we hit a lucky patch; and now, with the Sun involved, we've got ourselves an astrological menage-a-trois - which may very well lead to some very happy times in the love department.

Love lives will improve via communication...and discretion. Mercury is nit-picky, and in this case, that works well, because it's Mercury's influence here that's going to remove nasty things like doubt or suspicion in a relationship.

Certain signs will thrive the heck out of this transit, and those signs are...

Zodiac signs whose love life improves during the Sun conjunct Mercury in Leo starting August 1 to August 11, 2021:

Taurus (April 20 - May 20)

Nobody ever realizes how deep you are, Taurus, and that's usually because you tend to be impulsive and in the moment.

It's never assumed that you're a profound thinker; you actually crave deep conversation and analytical thinking - yet no one seems to know this.

What you're about to experience during this Sun Conjunct Mercury transit is the attention you're going to be paid; someone loves you, and they want to know you inside and out.

That means, you're being taken seriously - a thing you've secretly desired, as you feel you are sometimes taken for granted, or thought of as the village idiot of the relationship.

What you didn't have in mind is that someone - more than likely your present romantic partner - wants more than your body. How ironic.

You spent all the time thinking you were only worth what your body could give, and now, thanks to the cosmos, your partner wants to know 'the real you.' Hallelujah!

Leo (July 23 - August 22)

If you've seen some of my other recent horoscopes and predictions for Leo, you know that it's not always Easy Street for you.

Being in your sign's season, one might think the world is your oyster, but we've learned that the 'oyster-life' is touch and go.

This is where things pivot for you Leo - it's time to get it going on, in terms of love and romance.

As of August 1 to August 11, you and your partner will unintentionally get into a conversation that has the capability of changing both of your lives - for the better.

Oh, that is just SUCH good news, and finally, too, eh? All it takes is a good old-fashioned sit down - eye to eye, with love and acceptance in your hearts.

Take the chance and let your guard down - your partner wants this. They need to see that you want to grow with them.

They need to know you're in for the long haul, and by showing them that you are more than willing to show up for both the conversation AND the relationship, you'll notice how pleasant life suddenly becomes for both of you.

Libra (September 23 - October 22)

You're one of the better communicators of the Zodiac, and that is mainly because you want to keep the peace. You're the diplomat of the relationship - in romance, work or in friendship.

How Sun Conjunct Mercury influences your love life is in your ability to spot a troubling issue and confront it head on - but with your natural Libra charm and understanding.

You have no idea how calming you can be, and your partner is seriously going to appreciate your demeanor during this time.

You will see an improvement in the feminine and masculine energy balance to your partnership; this transit might ask you to be the mediator, but that's a position you were made for.

You can see the future, and it's beautiful - it's something you want to share with your special person, and only you - thanks to this transit - can communicate this.

Everything out of your mouth is exactly what your partner needs to hear. You have the potential to not only save what's great about the relationship you're in, but you can also create a path by which you can both travel on - and grow.

Jungle Cruise was Dwayne Johnson’s dream project inspired by Pirates - Polygon

Dwayne Johnson is everywhere because he wants to be. A prodigy born from the WWE, the performer is not only one of the few pro wrestlers to make the jump to Hollywood’s big time, but also stick around for 20 years. That might be because, in the mid-2010s, Johnson decided to leverage the currency of his stardom to start his own production company, Seven Bucks Productions, to make his biggest dreams come true. One of those dreams was to make his own Pirates of the Caribbean (because, like Polygon, The Rock really loves Pirates of the Caribbean). That’s where Jungle Cruise came in.

“DJ always had a dream of doing a big Disney movie,” Hiram Garcia, president of Seven Bucks Productions, tells Polygon. “He was so enamored with Pirates. The first time he saw the first trailer for Pirates, and seeing that ride come to life, and what the ride meant to fans, to see that world, he was always like, ‘Man, I hope one day I can get to a point where Disney would would want to do something like that with me.’”

In the early days, Johnson was always trying to crack the code of what a larger-than-life, wrestling-anointed performer was supposed to do on the big screen. His major break came from 2001’s The Mummy Returns, with his cameo as the Scorpion King, a role souped up with then-state-of-the-art-technology. (“The Scorpion King came in a really tough time of CG,” Garcia says with a laugh. “If you ever go back and watch that he was really not involved.”) But Johnson spun a moment of cringe into a franchise — his work on the series spinoff The Scorpion King would set the adventurous tone for his career. He dabbled in kids movies, connected with auteurs, latched himself on to the Fast franchise, but eventually Johnson figured himself out. Part of that was establishing Seven Bucks Productions, in order to do what he really wanted to do: make giant movies that mass audiences want to see. Some might raise an eyebrow over Johnson’s commerce-meets-art approach, but as Garcia puts it, that’s just the P.T. Barnum-esque dream.

“We absolutely love four-quadrant storytelling,” Garcia says. “I think for us — Dany [Garcia, Seven Bucks co-founder], Dwayne, myself — we’ve always been fans of four-quad movies like Jurassic Park, ET, Back to the Future, the kind of storytelling that you can take the whole family to, eight to 80, everyone has a good time. That’s the maximum version of a big communal theatrical experience.”

The plan has translated to everything from Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle to Rampage to Stephen Merchant’s more intimate wrestling-themed comedy Fighting with My Family. But Jungle Cruise, it turns out, is the culmination of a number of Johnson’s interests.

“Ironically, Jungle Cruise was DJ’s favorite ride,” Garcia says. “And luckily, Disney was in a place where they were interested in trying to get something go with Jungle Cruise. But DJ had this wish that we never even knew that he had this aspiration of like, ‘One day I want to, I want to be able to do that.’ So it all came together. It all came together in a great way just several years later from the first time we talked about it.”

While Jungle Cruise makes good on Johnson’s dream to lead a movie in the mold of Pirates, Indiana Jones, and The Mummy, it’s also given him another key collaborator: The Shallows and Non-Stop director Jaume Collet-Serra. The two forged such a connection on the set of the Disney adventure movie that Johnson recruited the director to helm his long-gestating comic book movie, Black Adam.

“I think everything that happened for a reason,” Garcia says with absolute glee in his voice. “I remember while we were filming Jungle Cruise, having a lunch with Jaume and being like, ‘Dude, you would be so perfect for Black Adam, let me pitch you this movie that we have this idea what we want to do. And luckily, he was like, ‘Oh, absolutely’ — it fit everything that he wanted to do. And Jaume, as you can imagine, having such a history in genre, and knowing edge and the kind of scares we wanted, he was perfect for Black Adam. But at the same time, I was also watching him do this big world-building movie with Jungle Cruise. So in Jaume, we could merge the all the elements we wanted for this.”

For more on Black Adam and Johnson’s future projects, check back next week for the rest of our interview with Garcia. Jungle Cruise is out now in theaters and Disney Plus Premier Access.

Morgan Wallen does tequila shots on stage following rehab stint for alcohol amid racial slur scandal - Daily Mail

Morgan Wallen does tequila shots on stage during cameo at a Luke Bryan show following 30-day rehab stint for alcohol... after racial slur scandal

  • The 28-year-old country singer made a cameo at the Luke Bryan show at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville during which he took celebratory tequila shots on stage
  • It was his first public appearance since he was lambasted for using the 'N-word' during a drunken night out and he was dropped from his agency and record label Big Loud
  • Following Wallen's racial slur scandal — which occurred during 'hour 72 of a 72-hour bender' back in February, he checked himself into rehab for 30 days
  • In a July 23 Good Morning America interview he said that the statements were meant to be 'playful' as he was around friends and they 'say dumb stuff together'
  •  'In our minds it was just playful. That sounds ignorant but that's really where it came from. It was wrong'

Morgan Wallen joined fellow country artist Luke Bryan on stage during his concert on Friday evening at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee

During his first major appearance since entering rehab for 30 days following his alcohol-fueled racial slur scandal, the 28-year-old singer appeared to be back to his old ways as he did shots on stage.

In a July 23 Good Morning America interview the Heartless singer addressed the video of him using the N-word after a night of partying, and said it was meant to be 'playful' before calling himself 'ignorant.'

Wallen joined Bryan, Jason Aldean and Tyler Hubbard of Florida Georgia Line on stage in a surprise cameo to sing some of his greatest hits and take celebratory tequila shots.

Bryan introduced him as he addressed the crowd: 'A really good friend of mine is here backstage tonight. I don't know if you know this...Do I need another tequila shot to get through this?'

His statements prompted Wallen to come out, upon which he was greeted by overwhelming cheers, and he kicked off his surprise set with his song More Than My Hometown.

'This is a song about staying true to yourself. That's been a really hard thing for me to do lately,' he told the crowd.

And afterwards he performed another hit, Whiskey Glasses, before remaining on stage as Aldean then sang She's Country.

'Thank you @lukebryan for having me out last night brother. Sharing the stage with you, @jasonaldean and @tylerhubbard was one of those moments I will never forget. Thank you Nashville for welcoming me so warmly. And to the rest of my fans, we will recreate this soon,' Wallen wrote via an Instagram post.

Despite vowing to his fans that they would do it again 'soon,' in the wake of his racial slur scandal back in February his record label, Big Loud Records, 'indefinitely suspended' his contract and his agency WME dropped him.

'In the wake of recent events, Big Loud Records, has made the decision to suspend Morgan Wallen's recording contract indefinitely. Republic Records fully supports Big Loud's decision and agrees such behavior will not be tolerated,' the label's statement read.

Warm welcome! 'Thank you Nashville for welcoming me so warmly. And to the rest of my fans, we will recreate this soon,' Wallen wrote via an Instagram post

And in an April issued handwritten apology Morgan had vowed that he would not be 'performing tour dates this summer' or 'the Luke Bryan tour dates,' as well as festivals.

Wallen was caught on camera by a neighbor — in footage obtained by TMZ — hurling the N-word as he dubbed his friend a 'p***y a** n***a', which he said in his GMA interview was on 'hour 72 of a 72-hour bender.'

'I had some of my longtime friends in town, you know, we had kinda just been partying all weekend and we figured we'd just go hard for the two or three days that they were there,' he recounted to Michael Strahan.

He continued to say that saying the racial slur 'didn't just happen,' but he was around friends and they 'say dumb stuff together.'

'In our minds it was just playful. That sounds ignorant but that's really where it came from. It was wrong.'

He also spoke candidly about going to rehab following the incident despite his tequila indulgence on stage.

'For 30 days, I spent some time out in San Diego, California — you know, just trying to figure it out …'why am I acting this way? Do I have an alcohol problem? Do I have a deeper issue?''

The Sneedville born singer also said that as his album sales spiked amid the scandal, he and his team decided to donate the amount— which was 'around $500,000' — to Black organizations including the Black Music Action Coalition.

After the footage surfaced back in February Wallen had issued an apology, in which he said he was 'embarrassed and sorry,' and called the racial slur 'inappropriate' and 'unacceptable,' vowing: 'I wish I could take it back' and that he would 'do better.'

In April — presumably post rehab — he also issued a handwritten apology via Instagram.
