‘Cobra Kai’: Ed Asner Remembered By Series Creators And Cast - Deadline

The cast and creators of Netflix’s Cobra Kai paid tribute to the legendary actor Ed Asner, who died peacefully on Aug. 29 at the age of 91.

Asner played the role of Johnny Lawrence’s (William Zabka) stepfather Sid Weinberg in three episodes (twice in season 1 and once in season 3). Season 4, which premieres in December, will likely pay tribute to Asner in some way.

“What performer could more perfectly embody the love/hate nature of playing Johnny Lawrence’s father than Ed Asner? When we dreamed up the character, there was no discussion – it was only Ed,” series creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg tell Deadline in a statement.

“Whenever he was on set, it was a nonstop parade of belly laughs as we all sat at the feet of a giant,” they continued. “Getting to briefly play in his orbit while he made our karate universe ever brighter and funnier was a great honor of our careers. We will miss him dearly and we send all our love to his family.”

Zabka also mourned the loss of Asner on Sunday.

“Devastated to hear this news. What a legend,” Zabka shared via Twitter. “What a beautiful human and special friend. I learned so much from him. My love and deepest condolences to the Asner family #RIP Dear Ed @TheOnlyEdAsner”

The original Karate Kid Ralph Macchio also lamented the loss of his co-star.

“So saddened by this news. A legend and icon in the acting world,” Macchio shared via Twitter. “Endless respect for his body of work on so many levels. Ed had graced the Cobra Kai series and am grateful to have had a moment or two to meet and connect with him. An absolute privilege. #RIPEdAsner”

Netflix revealed last week Cobra Kai had been renewed for season 5 four months before the new season premieres. Production is scheduled to begin in the fall.

Kanye West's 'Donda' Album: All the Lyrics That Are Seemingly About Kim Kardashian - Entertainment Tonight

Ron Bushy, Iron Butterfly Drummer, Dead at 79 - Ultimate Classic Rock

Ron Bushy, the longtime drummer for Iron Butterfly, has died at the age of 79.

A message posted to the band’s Facebook page noted that the rocker “passed away peacefully, with his wife Nancy by his side.” TMZ reports that the musician had been battling cancer.

Born in Washington, D.C. in 1941, Bushy didn’t pick up the drums until he was in college in San Diego. “I studied biology and psychology. I was going to become a Marine Biologist and go to Scripps Institute of Oceanography in La Jolla,” the rocker recalled during a 2021 interview with Vinyl Writer Music. “I got side tracked into music part time. I rented a drum set and learned to play drums to Booker T. & the MG’s, ‘Green Onions.’”

In 1966, Bushy joined Iron Butterfly. The Los Angeles based group was part of the community of classic rock acts that emerged from the Laurel Canyon music scene at the time.

“We were a community of musicians and friends,” Bushy recalled. “We all lived in the same house in Laurel Canyon and everyone hung out together. Us and all the other guys, like the Doors, Buffalo Springfield and many more greats from this time period.”

Iron Butterfly would go on to release six studio albums from 1968 to 1975, with Bushy as the only band member to appear on every release.

The group became known for their distinctive blend of psychedelic and hard rock sounds. Iron Butterfly’s commercial peak came in 1968 with the release of their sophomore album, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. The LP’s title track became a breakthrough hit, rocketing the band to stardom. Bushy was an important presence on the song -- which ran a daunting 17-minutes in length -- contributing a long and legendary drum solo within the piece.

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida sold more than 8 million copies worldwide within its first year of release, becoming the best-selling record in the history of recorded music at that time. It eventually sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, including going four-times platinum in the U.S.

Iron Butterfly initially broke up in 1971 following the release of their fourth album, Metamorphosis. When the band reformed in 1974, only Bushy remained from the previous lineup (though guitarist Erik Brann, who had been in the group from ‘67-’69, also returned.) Iron Butterfly put out two LPs in 1975, Scorching Beauty and Sun and Steel, the latter being their final studio release.

Though not recording new albums, the band continued off-and-on touring for multiple decades. Bushy was a dependable presence in the group, consistently manning the drums at the band’s live shows. Health concerns finally forced Bushy to retire from the road in the mid-2010s, but the drummer still occasionally made guest appearances with his former group.

James L. Brooks Pays Tribute to Ed Asner, Last of the Original ‘Mary Tyler Moore Show’ Stars - Variety

Good night, Lou.

Ed Asner, the famed character actor, activist and union leader who died Sunday at the age of 91, was the last surviving member of original core cast of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.”

The ground-breaking sitcom that ran on CBS from 1970 to 1977 led Asner to become the first TV actor to play the same character in a comedy, “Mary Tyler Moore’s” irascible WJM-TV news director Lou Grant, and in the CBS drama “Lou Grant,” where Asner took center stage as a new incarnation of the Grant character in Los Angeles as a big-city newspaper editor.

In the “Mary Tyler Moore” pilot, Asner’s Grant delivers one of the classic TV comedy lines of all time as he interviews Moore’s eager Mary Richards for the associate producer job at Minneapolis’ TV station. “You’ve got spunk,” Grant tells Richards. With the perfect timing that came from his early stage experience, Asner paused just long enough to let her smile and nod before he barks, “I hate spunk!”

In paying tribute to his longtime star, “Mary Tyler Moore” co-creator and producer James L. Brooks told Variety that Asner was the ultimate team player and consummate pro who helped set a harmonious and respectful tone for the work environment on “Mary Tyler Moore.” Brooks said Asner always kept his eye on what was good for the show, not just his own interests.

“He was a beautiful actor,” Brooks said. “He was an able team player. He was just as deeply a good guy as everybody sensed he was.”

Brooks said Asner’s time in the improv group Second City was important to his future versatility. Asner won three Emmys (and racked up seven consecutive nominations throughout the series’ run) for supporting comedy actor for “Mary Tyler Moore” and two more Emmys for lead drama actor for “Lou Grant,” which ran from 1977 to 1982.

Asner was consistently generous with other actors and always looking to create a collaborative atmosphere on the set, Brooks said. Asner and Moore developed an on-air rapport that was a go-to asset for the writers.

“When Lou said ‘Mary come in to my office,’ we were never on more solid ground,” Brooks said of the two-hander scenes that Asner and Moore often had in Grant’s tiny office. Asner had a naturally endearing sheepishness to him that writers wrote in to the Lou Grant character.

When Asner auditioned for “Mary Tyler Moore,” Brooks recalled that a few minutes after he left, Asner came bustling back into the room and earnestly asked to do it again. “I can do it so much better than that,” Brooks remembered Asner saying at the time. Brooks noted that Asner also had a great chemistry with Betty White, who joined “Mary Tyler Moore” in Season 4 as the lascivious “Happy Homemaker” TV personality Sue Ann Nivens.

Asner also commanded respect for his work as a union leader and activist on controversial political issues such as America’s intervention in Central American in the 1980s.

“He really cared about the causes he got involved in,” Brooks said. “People respected that someone at his level cared to get involved at all.”

Asner is the fourth major player from “Mary Tyler Moore” to die this year. Gavin MacLeod, who played news writer Murray Slaughter for the series’ entire run, died in May at the age of 90. Cloris Leachman, who played Richards’ friend and landlord Phyllis Lindstrom, died in January at 94, the same month that saw the passing of Allan Burns, Brooks’ co-creator and longtime writing partner, at age 85. Moore died in 2017 at age 80.

Brooks credited Asner for being a person who was always “humble before the task.” He was an enormous part of the success of “Mary Tyler Moore,” the show that blazed trails for the portrayal of single women on television.

“He was a man for all seasons,” Brooks said. “He was one of the good ones.”

Jennifer Lopez Looks More Regal Than Ever As She Arrives At D&G Party In Venice – Watch - HollywoodLife

Queen vibes! Jennifer Lopez arrived to D&G’s epic Venice soirée in an ensemble fit for royalty, right down to her sparkly tiara.

Jennifer Lopez, 52, just reminded the world why she’s as fashion icon. The “Jenny From The Block” singer arrived to Dolce & Gabbana’s epic gala in Venice, Italy on Saturday, Aug. 28 in a show stopping ensemble fit for royalty. J.Lo looked like a queen in a green silk floral cape over top a black baroque floral pant and bedazzled crystal crop top. She topped her pulled back hair with an epic tiara, finishing the look with a sparkly pair of platform jeweled sandals and a woven handbag.

The Wedding Planner actress took to Instagram to show off her ultra-glam look for the star-studded soirée, which was held in the middle of the iconic Piazza San Marco. Giving her best runway strut to Lady Gaga‘s “Babylon,” Jen was clearly excited as she let out a small shriek and laugh towards the end of the clip. “That Runway show glow,” she wrote, shouting out her makeup and skincare brand JLo Beauty (also used for her evening glam by makeup artist Mary Phillips). In another video shot by the Venice taxi stand, the Bronx native looked sensational as she showed off her look and gave the camera a smoldering stare.

Jennifer was joined at the party, which is part of a three-day event as part of the Venice Film Festival, by her longtime manager Benny Medina. Beau Ben Affleck, 49, didn’t appear to be in attendance — however, he was curiously photographed at the airport ahead of her private flight to Italy late last week. It’s unclear if the Oscar winner flew with her to Venice and decided not to attend the party, or perhaps was just dropping her off before heading back home.

The True Love author also posted a behind-the-scenes photo while getting ready for the bash, wearing, of course, a D&G robe. Her skin was absolutely glowing — likely thanks to her holy grail ‘That JLo Glow’ serum which she uses daily — as she gave fans a preview of her partly done make-up!

Recently, the star has been on somewhat of a D&G kick: she rocked a multi-colored patchwork mini dress by the Italian luxury label on her ritzy yacht vacation with Ben last month, along with a bright yellow kimono and a colorful tote bag from their new collection. She also sported a bejeweled bikini top and boxer shorts by the brand in her video for “Cambia El Paso.”

AFP

Ed Asner, best-known for playing fictional TV newsman Lou Grant, has died aged 91.

The actor, whose roles also included voicing the lead in the Pixar film Up, passed away "peacefully" on Sunday morning, his family said.

"Words cannot express the sadness we feel. With a kiss on your head-Goodnight dad. We love you."

The character Lou Grant was first introduced as Mary Richards's boss on The Mary Tyler Moore Show in the 1970s.

Grant, the irascible editor of the fictional Los Angeles Tribune, then became a character in a show in his own right from 1977 to 1982.

The role helped earn Asner seven Emmy awards across his career, the most for a male performer.

In 2009, he became known to a new generation of audiences by playing elderly widower Carl Fredricksen in the animated hit Up.

He also played Santa Claus in the 2003 Will Ferrell comedy Elf.

During his acting career Asner was an outspoken supporter of a number of humanitarian and political causes, including trade unionism and animal rights.

He served as president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1981 to 1985, and was honoured in 2000 with the union's prestigious Ralph Morgan Award.

Asner was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1929, and began acting at school.

After serving two years in France in the US Army Signal Corps, Asner returned to theatre work in Chicago.

In 1955 he made his Broadway debut with Jack Lemmon in Face of A Hero, then performed with the American and New York Shakespeare festivals and appeared in numerous off-Broadway shows.

Asner moved to Hollywood in 1961 and began his acclaimed career in television and film.

He was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame in 1996.
