Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Return Home to California After Queen’s Funeral - E! NEWS

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have made the journey home.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are back in California after being in the U.K. where they attended Queen Elizabeth II's Sept. 19 funeral.

Harry and Meghan were already in the U.K. before Her Majesty's death, attending the 2022 One Young World Summit in Manchester, England. Once news broke that doctors were "concerned" for the monarch's health, Harry rushed to the Queen's Balmoral Estate to be by her side. At the Scotland property, Queen Elizabeth passed away at the age of 96.

Following the news of her passing on Sept. 8, Meghan, Harry, Prince William and Kate Middleton joined forces to make a joint appearance outside Windsor Castle two days later. The group sighting marked the first time all four parties have been photographed together in over two years.

During the appearance, Harry touched on how things have felt inside the castle walls since Queen Elizabeth passed on. "It's a lonely place up there now without her," he said to supporters gathered outside the castle on Sept. 10, as seen in a video captured by The Sun. "Every room she was in, we felt her presence throughout."

‘Abbott Elementary’ Recap: Season 2 Premiere, Episode 1 — Guest Star - TVLine

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Wednesday’s Abbott Elementary premiere. Proceed at your own risk!

Janine was feeling pretty good about herself during Abbott Elementary‘s Season 2 premiere, and why wouldn’t she be? After all, the teacher had scored quite the coup: She got Philadelphia Flyers mascot Gritty to agree to make an appearance during the first week of school!

But alas, Janine’s break up with Tariq affected her more than she wanted to admit because she got the dates wrong, and the local celebrity showed up a week early during the teachers’ Development Day. It was a bummer for Janine, but a major win for creator and star Quinta Brunson, who was very excited about the guest star during a Television Critics Assoc. virtual press tour panel.

“He is very special to us. He is the biggest celeb cameo of all time,” Brunson enthused, before revealing that the mascot was supposed to appear during last season.

“We almost had Gritty for the pilot of our show. He’s been invested from the beginning, before you guys even knew about the show,” Brunson shared. “So it was wonderful to get this opportunity to have him be involved. Gritty is just as vital to the particular Philadelphian spirit of this show as the Eagles are or cheesesteak or pretzels, etc. So getting him was like a dream come true. I was over the moon. I was starstruck.”

Tyler James Williams — whose character Gregory at first didn’t get the appeal of the fuzzy mascot — called Gritty “a phenom that I feel like relates to everybody on a human level, a cellular level. That doesn’t need to be explained,” the actor said.

Added Lisa Ann Walter, who plays Melissa: “Gritty is undeniable. But I will say that, in person, he is even better. Because his improv is stellar. Gritty is a comedy genius.”

Shakira won't lie: It's hard talking about her split from Gerard Piqué.

Though it's been three months since the superstar singer, 45, and the soccer player, 35, announced their breakup, Shakira is still finding it difficult to address her family's new chapter. 

"I've remained quiet and just tried to process it all," Shakira—who shares sons Milan, 9, and Sasha, 7, with Gerard—told Elle in the publication's October cover story. "Um, and yeah, it's hard to talk about it, especially because I'm still going through it, and because I'm in the public eye and because our separation is not like a regular separation. And so it's been tough not only for me, but also for my kids. Incredibly difficult."

"I have paparazzi camping outside, in front of my house, 24/7," Shakira added. "And there's not a place where I can hide from them with my kids, except for my own house. You know, we can't take a walk in the park like a regular family or go have an ice cream or do any activity without paparazzi following us. So it's hard."

Still, the "Hips Don't Lie" singer is doing her best to shield her kids from the breakup—and the media attention. "I try to do it and to protect them, because that's my number one mission in life," she continued. "But then they hear things in school from their friends or they come across some disagreeable, unpleasant news online, and it just affects them, you know?"

Maren Morris Might Skip CMA Awards Following Feud With Jason Aldean’s Wife - Deadline

Maren Morris has revealed that she doesn’t feel “comfortable” attending the CMA Awards this year and is possibly skipping the event altogether. The country singer is nominated for album of the year with Humble Quest but may avoid the award show following her feud with Jason Aldean’s wife, social media influencer Brittany Aldean.

“I haven’t decided if I’m gonna go,” she told the Los Angeles Times. “I’m very honored that my record is nominated. But I don’t know if I feel [at] home there right now. So many people I love will be in that room, and maybe I’ll make a game-time decision and go. But as of right now, I don’t feel comfortable going.”

Morris found herself at odds with Brittany after the influencer made a joked deemed transphobic.

“I’d really like to thank my parents for not changing my gender when I went through my tomboy phase. I love this girly life,” she posted on Instagram in August.

The Voice alum Cassadee Pope made reference of Brittany’s social media post on Twitter and Morris replied with the following: “It’s so easy to, like, not be a scumbag human? Sell your clip-ins and zip it, Insurrection Barbie.”

Morris’ response went viral and Brittany was booked by Fox News and appeared on the Tucker Carlson show defending her stance. Carlson called Morris “lunatic” and Morris flipped the script on it, embraced the adjective and started selling t-shirts on her website. Morris ended up raising over $150k with proceeds going to organizations helping trans youth.

NBC Revives Tarnished Golden Globe Telecast, Citing Reforms - The New York Times

The company said it was bringing the awards show back under a one-year agreement, to be broadcast on Jan. 10 and streaming on Peacock.

The Golden Globe Awards telecast, which sloshes money through the entertainment economy, will return in January with an even bigger platform. NBC canceled the show in 2021 amid an ethics, finance and diversity scandal that continues to simmer.

NBC said on Tuesday that it would broadcast the 80th Golden Globes ceremony on Jan. 10, a prime spot on Hollywood’s awards-season calendar. (Oscar balloting begins on Jan. 12.) For the first time, the show will also be available simultaneously online, through NBCUniversal’s streaming service, Peacock.

Nominations will be announced on Dec. 12.

To justify its decision, NBCUniversal pointed to a wide range of reforms at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the unorthodox organization that bestows the Globes. “We recognize the H.F.P.A.’s commitment to ongoing change,” Frances Berwick, NBCUniversal’s chairwoman of entertainment networks, said in a statement.

Notably, however, the company said it was bringing back the Globes only under a one-year agreement, allowing the organizers “to explore new opportunities for domestic and global distribution across a variety of platforms in the future.”

The foreign press association has overhauled membership eligibility, recruited new members with an emphasis on diversity, enacted a stricter code of conduct, elected a new president and largely ended its tax-exempt status, transforming into a for-profit company with a philanthropic arm. Last month, the H.F.P.A. sent a letter to studios that pointed to “transformational change” in the areas of “diversity, transparency and accountability.”

The 108-member foreign press association now has six Black voters — up from zero last year — and has added 103 nonmember voters, a dozen or so of whom are Black.

Some publicists, stars and filmmakers are satisfied, or at least ready to end more than a year of behind-the-scenes bickering over the degree to which the H.F.P.A. needed to reform. Others are holding their noses, unsatisfied but willing to re-engage with the Globes as a promotional platform for Oscar campaigns. Another contingent remains adamant that the foreign press association has not done enough, and that the Globes should perhaps be retired forever.

“There isn’t a consensus,” said Amanda Lundberg, chief executive of 42West, a Hollywood public relations firm that represents stars like Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks and filmmakers such as Baz Luhrmann and Martin Scorsese. “Everyone will make up their own minds. Some feel good about it and some don’t.”

Hollywood businesses, however, are almost universally aligned: Please, pretty please, let the Golden Globes champagne flow again.

Most movie studios had quietly made it clear to NBC that they view the Globes telecast and accompanying red carpet spectacle as crucial marketing opportunities for winter films — especially dramas, which have been struggling at the box office. In a study released last year, economists at Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania found that, on average, films that win Globes earn an additional $16.5 million in ticket sales.

Streaming services covet Globes to influence voters at more prestigious awards ceremonies. Last year, Netflix campaigned for Emmy votes by citing prior Golden Globe victories, despite separately vowing to boycott future Globes ceremonies until “meaningful” reforms were made.

Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery declined to comment on NBC’s decision to revive the Globes telecast. The other company that had announced a boycott, Amazon Studios, did not respond to a request for comment. In private conversations, executives at all three companies said they had softened their stance in recent months and started to re-engage with some Globe voters on a one-by-one basis, if not yet as a group.

The Golden Globe Awards broadcast generates tens of millions of dollars for various Hollywood businesses. Stylists, catering companies, party planners, chauffeurs, banquet workers, florists and spray tanners count on the show to generate a significant part of their winter income. The Hollywood Reporter and Variety each generate several million dollars in revenue from Globes advertising.

Advertisers bought roughly $50.3 million worth of airtime during NBC’s most-recent Globes telecast, according to Kantar, a media research firm. Before pulling the plug, NBC was paying the nonprofit H.F.P.A. about $30 million a year for rights to the show. Another $30 million went to an independent company, Dick Clark Productions, which mounted the telecast.

Live awards shows, including the Oscars, have lost tens of millions of viewers over the past decade, but the biggest ceremonies still attract a bigger audience than almost anything else on traditional television, aside from live sports. The most-recent Golden Globes telecast, held without celebrity attendees because of the pandemic, attracted about seven million viewers, according to Nielsen. Prepandemic, the show was attracting about 18 million viewers annually.

The foreign press association had long been viewed as unserious and slippery. In the late 1960s, the Federal Communications Commission got the Globes temporarily booted from the airwaves, saying it “misled the public as to how the winners were determined.” In the 1990s and 2000s, Harvey Weinstein, the since-imprisoned Miramax co-founder, manipulated the organization in ways big and small — expensive gifts, special access to stars, and his own time and attention at a moment when other studio chiefs could barely hide their derision. He was often rewarded with a stunning number of nominations.

Hollywood decided it could no longer turn a blind eye in February 2021, when a wide-ranging article in The Los Angeles Times enumerated financial and ethical lapses at the foreign press association and revealed that the H.F.P.A. had no Black members. Also in February 2021, the association snubbed “Bridgerton,” angering Netflix and Shonda Rhimes, the show’s powerful producer.

“For far too long, demands for perks, special favors and unprofessional requests have been made to our teams and to others across the industry,” a Warner spokeswoman said at the time. “We regret that as an industry, we have complained, but largely tolerated this behavior until now.”

More than 100 publicity firms closed ranks, refusing to make stars available for Golden Globe appearances and contributing to NBC’s cancellation of the 2022 telecast. The foreign press association held a nontelevised ceremony in January, but most stars refused to acknowledge being nominated or winning. Scarlett Johansson had said that H.F.P.A. news conferences “bordered on sexual harassment,” and Tom Cruise returned his three Golden Globe trophies.

As with everything in Hollywood, a type of groupthink approach will emerge in the coming months regarding celebrity participation at the January edition. But it is very unlikely that Mr. Cruise would show up, for instance, a potential problem since his most-recent film, “Top Gun: Maverick,” is a plausible contender for the best drama trophy.

Brendan Fraser has received rave festival reviews for his performance in “The Whale,” a coming film with Oscar ambitions. Has he forgiven the H.F.P.A. for its tepid response when he told the organization in 2003 that a member groped him?

Even in reform, the foreign press association has faced questions about conflicts of interest. In July, the H.F.P.A. agreed to sell its Golden Globe assets to Eldridge Industries, a holding company owned by the billionaire investor Todd Boehly. Members of the foreign press association became employees paid $75,000 annually for five years. A separate nonprofit entity was established to continue the H.F.P.A.’s philanthropic endeavors. The association said on Tuesday that it had donated more than $50 million to more than 70 entertainment-related charities over the last three decades.

In August, Eldridge bought Dick Clark Productions. Eldridge is also a minority owner of several Hollywood trade publications, including The Hollywood Reporter. In addition, Eldridge owns a piece of the specialty film company A24, which often has movies in the awards hunt. Eldridge also owns part of the Beverly Hilton Hotel, which has long hosted the Golden Globes ceremony.
