If you’re curious about what’s next for the queen’s favorite son, now that she is no longer around to protect him, Monday’s funeral procession in Scotland provided a glimpse. Prince Andrew, who has spent the past few years clumsily addressing his alleged involvement in his friend Jeffrey Epstein’s underage trafficking ring, was walking behind his mother’s coffin when someone yelled out, “Andrew, you’re a sick old man!”
The heckler was subsequently arrested and gave a brief but compelling statement while sitting in handcuffs under police supervision, telling a reporter that “powerful men shouldn’t be allowed to commit sexual crimes and get away with it.”
It’s true that despite recently paying a multimillion-dollar sex-abuse settlement related to his links to Epstein, Andrew has otherwise experienced few consequences. He was stripped of his royal and military titles in January after a Manhattan judge ruled that Virginia Giuffre’s sexual-assault lawsuit against him could move forward; therefore, he was the only one of the queen’s children not wearing a military uniform during Monday’s procession. But the queen also offered him all sorts of protection, including a place to hide from attorneys trying to serve him court papers, a spot on the palace’s payroll, and even the occasional public appearance. Something tells me there are plenty more hecklers waiting in the wings.
